Chapter Thirteen

By the time they pulled up to her house, Lana was ready to crawl under a blanket and never come out.

They had dropped Ally, Drew, Jer and Betty off at the Red Rock cabin in the hopes Ava could whip out some shamanic mojo to fix this mess. The entire foray had been a disaster, from losing Ganzorig in the caves to not realizing he’d planned this spell for them. The pleading look from Ally’s mountain lion when she’d stomped around, unable to shift back, would haunt her for some time to come. Lana swallowed hard, her throat tightening.

Lucas turned the engine of his car off and seemed to deflate. He sank forward to rest his forehead against the steering wheel.

“Fuck,” he muttered, tightening his grip on the wheel. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.”

The anguish radiated off him so thick she could taste it in the air. Those dark eyes glowed with loathing and his mouth formed a thin line. He couldn’t even look at her.

Even with the air of ‘don’t fuck with me’ around him, Lana could feel the way he grieved, a visceral thing between them. What had happened today was a devastating loss, and he was bearing the brunt of it. She reached out and slipped her hand over his.

“Hey,” she murmured, her voice softening. “Today sucked, and I’m not going to try to convince you otherwise. But you don’t get to shoulder the weight alone. None of us had any idea Ganzorig would try something like that.”

“I should’ve,” he said in a near growl. “Instead of running him down and making sure he was fucking dead, I was diving after you through the tunnels. Hell, I would’ve taken any excuse to get farther out of the cave. I’m a fucking coward and don’t deserve to call myself Tribe.”

Lana had buzzed with her own distress ever since they’d left Ricketts Glen, but the moment Lucas opened up, hers melted away. The way he ripped himself to shreds lanced right through her heart.

“Okay, well that’s some bullshit,” she responded, “but instead of sitting out here in the cold, there’s a house right in front of us. We can chug this self-loathing train to there.”

Lucas’ mouth twisted as he nodded in response. She hopped out of the car first, and the echo of his door slamming resounded through the crisp air. A shudder rolled down her spine, but whether from winter’s breath or the events of the day, she couldn’t tell. A couple of flakes drifted to tickle her nose and cheeks and melted there. She looked up to witness the swirling wonder of the falling snow, as though the stars themselves had descended from the skies.

Lucas was about to stride past her, but she reached to slip her hand into his. He whipped toward her, a broken ferocity flashing in his eyes. He was hurting like she’d never seen him before. But he trusted her enough to let her see, and that—that meant so much.

Even with the cold seeping past her peacoat, when their eyes met, heat blossomed inside her anew.
